Tips To Prepare You For Your First Travel Shoot
April 18, 2023Prepare for any weather conditions
One of the most crucial tips for a travel shoot is to be prepared for any type of weather. Even if the weather app predicts sunny skies all day, make sure to pack covers for your camera and a waterproof jacket just in case! It’s much safer to overpack a little if it means you aren’t caught out in unlikely rain. Additionally, a good camera bag is essential for protecting your equipment during travel. Look for a bag that’s durable, waterproof, and has enough space to carry all your gear.
Be flexible
There are a number of variables that are out of your control that are likely to change last minute on a travel log shoot so it is important to be flexible. For example, weather and lighting condition changes, time and equipment limitations, and unexpected closures. If the weather forecast shifts, try to change your schedule around so as to take advantage of any better days for what you want to shoot.
Make friends with the locals
Networking with locals in the area you are shooting can be a really useful way of finding out secret spots and best times to go there, as well as other tips that many help inform your shoot.
Lenses
It’s best to take versatile zoom lenses that will allow you to pack just one or two lenses in your bag that cover a wide range of focal lengths. However it all depends on your shooing style, how much you’re able to carry and what you’re shooting. A small prime lens may be great for travelling but the fixed focal length may be limiting.
Memory cards + Batteries
If you are out shooting all day, make sure you have plenty of memory cards and batteries to shoot all of the content you have planned. It might be worth investing in more memory cards and batteries than potentially missing out on a crucial shot because you don’t have enough space left or your battery has died. Make sure to then do a full backup at the end of each day and re-charge all your batteries.
Cleaning kit
Dust and dirt can easily get into your camera and lenses during travel. A cleaning kit that includes a blower, cleaning solution, and microfibre cloth can help keep your equipment clean and functioning properly whilst on the go.
