Things We Didn’t Realise Before Opening a Photography Studio

Opening a photography studio can be an exciting venture for any photographer. However, there are a few things we hadn’t considered before opening up our photography studio in Hemel Hempstead and hopefully this blog post might help you if you’re thinking of opening up your own photography space.

Painting

One of the biggest surprises for many people when opening a studio is the amount of time and effort that goes into keeping an infinity cove clean and white. After each client, the cove usually needs to be painted white again to ensure that it looks fresh and clean for the next shoot. This can be a time-consuming process, and it’s essential to budget enough time for this task between bookings.

Space

Space is also a crucial consideration when opening a photography studio. While you may have enough room for your camera and lighting equipment, you also need to consider the space required for hair, makeup and styling. You will need to have enough space for the necessary equipment, such as chairs, clothing rails, mirrors, and hair dryers (with plug sockets nearby). You will also need to ensure that there is enough space for your clients to move around and feel comfortable.

Messy Props

Clients may bring messy props or accessories to the studio, which can create a bit of a mess. It’s important to have cleaning supplies on hand and ensure there is enough time after the shoot to clear up any extra clutter created by the props and overall set design. Some examples of messy props might include: sand, glitter, confetti, paint or water.

Creativity

Lastly, one of the great things we didn’t realise about having a photography studio is seeing how each client utilises the blank space. Each creative will have a different vision and perspective, which can be exciting to see come to life in your studio. It is also really rewarding to meet so many different people from various creative industries and backgrounds. The range of concepts that have been produced in our photography studio was unexpected but definitely one of the best parts of the job.
