3 Simple Yet Effective Music Video Set Ups
February 6, 2023Music videos are a powerful tool for artists to showcase their talents and connect with their audience. But, creating a visually engaging music video doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. In this blog post, we will be discussing 3 simple yet effective set ups we used on Tigercub’s - Stop Beating on My Heart (Like A Bass Drum) music video that can bring your own music video to the next level. Whether you’re a musician looking to create your first music video or a seasoned professional looking for fresh inspiration, hopefully you’ll find something valuable in this post.
PRISMS
Prisms were used consistently throughout this music video. The kaleidoscope effect added an interesting and unique element to the shots and allowed us to distort and split the images in lots of different ways. This simple technique can add depth and dimension to your music videos and form abstract compositions with a touch of creative flair. We purchased a set of 3 handheld prisms for around £90 which we have utilised on other projects since.
GLITTER CURTAIN
One of the most successful and visually striking looks in the music video was created using a cheap glitter curtain backdrop from a party shop and a fan. The fan created a sense of movement, energy and fluidity, whilst the glitter particles in the curtain produced a sparkle which stood out really well in slow motion. Additionally, using the glitter curtain as a backdrop created some depth and allowed the performer to be more prominent in the frame.
SPOTLIGHT
We only used two lights for this set up: a spotlight and soft light source coming from above, which were able to create a backdrop, key light and silhouette all in one. The spotlight can be used to draw attention to a specific part of the frame i.e. the performer which can help draw focus. Another tip is to think about the colours of the lights. In this instance, we took colours directly from the band’s album artwork. You will want to consider the mood and tone of the music video and use colours which reflect that to tie everything together.
